I want in!

Apr 02, 2009

If you live in (or near) Cambridge and the idea of skating around at high speed knocking other girls over, inventing a violent alter ego for  yourself and doing it all in fishnets appeals, we understand. In fact, we encourage these impulses and we’d like to meet you.

If you think all this sounds ace, but you had the misfortune to be born male, then take heart – you can still be involved. We’re also recruiting referees to make sure we don’t elbow each other in the face (amongst other things), so we want to hear from you too. If you’re female and want to be involved but don’t fancy the full contact element of the sport, why not become a referee? We only hit refs accidentally (and only occasionally), and we’d love to have you on the team.

If you think roller derby could be the sport for you, then here’s what you do:

Get in touch email us at info@rollerbillies.com – or use the handy ‘contact us’ link at the top of the page. We’re happy to answer your questions, and we’d love to have you come and watch a training session.

Come and meet us: We can let you know when we’re training so you can come and see what it’s all about. We’ll explain what we’re up to, answer any questions you have, and give you more information to take home. Roller derby is a full contact sport and although we’re very careful with beginners, you do skate at your own risk. Watching, however, is completely safe.

Come and skate with us: Once you’ve been to watch and decided you can’t resist the feel of the wheel, you can come to your first training session – for free!

We love Fresh Meat, and we have come up with a structured 16-week course to teach you all the basic skills you will need to start playing Roller derby with the big girls. On the course you will be taught all the essential bits like how to start and stop and most importantly how to fall safely. We will go through the basic rules of the game including, how you score points, what the penalties are and how to tell what the Ref’s mean when they are waving their arms at you!

You will need full protective gear before we’ll let you on the track. We have some kit we can loan you to start out with, and we’ll give you a full kit list when you meet us.

We take safety very seriously, and we will ask you to fill in a medical form and sign a disclaimer before you can skate. We’re also very serious about respect for one another and the ethics of our league, so all participating skaters will be asked to read and sign our code of conduct.

Whether you’re thinking HELL YES or um, I want to but I’m a bit scared, get in touch. We don’t bite. And you don’t have to wear the fishnets if you don’t want to.

    Hi there,

I saw my first Merby match at the Violence of the Jams meet in Croydon on Saturday. I was wondering if you have a Merby team or have any use for guys who are thinking of getting a pair of skates?

    Jon

      Hi jon
Yes we can always use more guys on skates as part of our ref team.
We dont have a merby team but a few of our refs travel down to london occasionally to play with the team there, and if you do decide to join us we will teach you all you need to know about how to skate and play the game.

    Hi

I’d like to come and have a look what you’re about. I used to love skating and could do with something fun and exhilarating to improve my fitness. When would be a good time to come and see what you do?
